Suicide Gene Therapy Suicide gene therapy begins by delivering a therapeutic gene into the cancer cells. The gene encodes an enzyme that will convert a nontoxic prodrug into a toxic compound. Because noncancerous cells do not have the suicide enzyme, they are not affected.
